College Divisions and Programs in the United States
In the United States, university sports are primarily organized under two major associations: the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics).
NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association)
The NCAA is composed of approximately 1,200 universities offering 23 sports and is organized into three divisions:
Division I (DI)
Division II (DII)
Division III (DIII)
NCAA Division I and Division II universities provide sports scholarships, with an annual scholarship budget estimated at $2 billion.
NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)
The NAIA consists of around 300 universities offering 13 sports, organized into two divisions:
Division I (DI)
Division II (DII)
Sports scholarships are available for both NAIA Division I and Division II, with an annual budget of approximately $450 million.
NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association)
The NJCAA includes 525 junior colleges across the United States, offering two-year programs. These colleges are divided into three divisions, providing a more affordable pathway for students to transition to four-year universities such as those in the NCAA or NAIA. The most popular sports in junior colleges include basketball, volleyball, and football.
Each year, the NJCAA holds 50 national championships across various sports. The annual budget for scholarships in junior colleges is around $2 billion.
